Edmonton Minute: Naming Rights, Retrofit Loans, and a Council Meeting Disrupted

Edmonton Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Edmonton politics

This Week In Edmonton:

  • On Tuesday, at 9:30 am, there will be a meeting of the Community and Public Services Committee. On the agenda is a discussion about progress on the Updated Community Plan to End Homelessness and the mortality rates of Edmonton's homeless population. Alarmingly, the number of annual deaths per year among the homeless population has increased considerably since 2017, spiking from 30 deaths in 2017 to 302 deaths in 2023. On Wednesday, at 9:30 am, there will be a meeting of the Urban Planning Committee. The Committee will discuss the policy by which City assets are named, with eight recommendations to further diversity and inclusion. Also on the agenda are minor adjustments to speed limits in various locations throughout the city.

  • At 1:30 pm on Wednesday, there will be a Special Meeting of City Council to discuss a Contractual Update and a Procurement Update. The entire meeting will be held in-camera (in secret). Finally, on Thursday, at 9:30 am, there will be an Executive Committee meeting. On the agenda is a report regarding the Ride Transit Program for low-income Edmontonians. The report notes that there has been increased demand for subsidized Ride Transit Program passes that has put pressure on the Program budget. The Committee will also discuss designating the Field Log House as a Municipal Historic Resource, as well as the Municipal Fleet Hydrogen Pilot Project Agreement. Edmonton is hoping to adopt hydrogen fuel for heavy-duty fleet vehicles such as transit buses, some semi-trucks, and dump trucks, waste trucks, and plow trucks. Given the farce with the electric buses, we’re sure nothing can go wrong here…

  • The Edmonton Oilers will face the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Western Conference Second Round at Rogers Arena in Vancouver tonight. This follows the Oilers' commanding 5-1 victory in Game 6 at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The team that emerges victorious will proceed to the Western Conference Final to compete against the Dallas Stars. The puck drops at 7:00 pm tonight! Let's go Oilers!
