Cancel The 6.6% Tax Hike
Thanks to the recently passed budget amendments, Edmontonians are staring down a 6.6% increase to their property taxes.
When the original budget was passed, a tax increase of 4.96% was planned for 2024 - already not good!
But, Council found even more things to spend your money on than they had originally planned!
The items on their spending list include expanded library service in Heritage Valley, more cash for the City’s anti-racism strategy, and more.
During deliberations, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi tried to “save” Edmontonians money with several budget amendments that brought the increase down from 7.06% to 6.6%.
The City tried to blame most on a $17 million arbitrated police salary adjustment, which was out of the City's control but, in reality, this represents just 0.5% of the overall operational budget.
In the end, the budget passed by a vote of 12-1.
Mayor Sohi and Councillors Erin Rutherford, Aaron Paquette, Keren Tang, Ashley Salvador, Andrew Knack, Anne Stevenson, Michael Janz, Tim Cartmell, Sarah Hamilton, Jo-Anne Wright, and Karen Principe voted in favour of the budget.
Councillor Jennifer Rice was opposed.
Some Councillors are already alluding to another adjustment in the spring.
That would be unorthodox, but it’s an opportunity to get the tax rate reduced!
At Common Sense Edmonton, we refuse to accept these tax increases without a fight.
